Mozambique has suffered grievously from the war between the government and Renamo rebels. Its people have suffered many depredations, as well as famine. Not surprisingly the once flourishing wildlife has declined sharply, and a promising management program to cull herbivores for food has collapsed. José Tello has prepared a detailed report for WWF International on the current status of protected areas and large mammals.

African monitor lizards have a Pan-African distribution (Bayless, 2002). These lizards are known from generalized to specific habitats across Africa (Bayless, 1997). If studying zoology, herpetology, epidemiology, parasitology, or ethnography, it is helpful to know the local and regional names of these reptiles. To date, the most comprehensive listing of local names for Varanus has been written by Auerbach (1995:243-245). The following compilation includes the local names for each monitor lizard species listed by country, tribe, language, and source.

Body Scars and Dorsal Fin Disfigurements as Indicators of Interaction Between Small Cetaceans and Fisheries Around the Mozambique Channel Island of Mayotte
Jeremy, K. et al.

2004 - 2008
N/A
Cetacean bycatch in fisheries occur in all oceans of the world and may have both lethal and non-lethal consequences (body injuries). In the lagoon of Mayotte (12o50’S, 45o10’E), in the northern Mozambique Channel, two main types of fisheries occur: handlining (inside the lagoon) and longlining (outside the barrier reef, over the ‘continental’ slope). The level of interactions between small cetaceans and fisheries in this area were characterised using identification photographs taken from July 2004 to April 2008 during dedicated cetacean surveys. Photographs were taken of Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus), melon-headed whales (Peponocephala electra) and short-finned pilot whales (Globicephala macrorhynchus).

Despite the growth in work linking climate change and national level development agendas, there has been limited attention to their political economy. These processes mediate the winners, losers and potential trade-offs between different goals, and the political and institutional factors which enable or inhibit integration across different policy areas. This paper applies a political economy analysis to case studies on low carbon energy in Kenya and carbon forestry in Mozambique.

Highways cause significant impacts to birds in four ways: direct mortality, indirect mortality, habitat fragmentation and disturbance. In this paper I discuss highway-related impacts, and suggest solutions from a highway management perspective. Non-flying birds (either behaviorally or structurally) such as gallinaceous birds and ducklings; waterbirds such as terns; owls; ground-nesters; scavengers; Neotropical overwater migrants; frugivorous birds; and birds attracted to salt are often killed from highway-related causes. Suggested solutions include highway crossing structures, diversion poles on bridges or medians, modified right-of-way mowing regimes, road kill removal, appropriate median vegetation, among others.

Towards the Establishment of an Ecologically Representative Network of Marine Protected Areas in Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique
WWF Eastern African Marine Ecoregion
2004
The aims of this publication are: - Provide guidance on how scientifically-based representative networks of MPAs can be established and its benefits. - Generate a focus on the commitments made at the World Summit on Sustainable Development and the obligations required relating to MPAs. - Review the status of the network of MPAs in each of the three countries. - Assess the effectiveness of existing MPAs in protecting marine biodiversity and contributing to sustainable livelihoods. - Identify gaps in the network at the level of the EAME and the actions needed to complete it. - Identify areas where international support is most urgently required to help these countries meet their targets and obligations.
N/A
This publication concerns the marine protected areas (MPAs) of three countries of the Eastern African Marine Ecoregion (EAME): Kenya, Tanzania and Mozambique. In all three countries, a large proportion of the rapidly increasing coastal population depends on marine resources for their food and income, inshore fisheries are over-exploited and degradation of marine and coastal ecosystems is escalating. MPAs are increasingly recognised as a tool for addressing these problems.

Groupers are widely distributed in the tropical and subtropical coastal waters, and are globally one of the most commercially important groups of marine fish, commanding high market price and are being heavily targeted in fisheries. Over fishing in Indonesia becomes a pivotal factor, which is seriously threatening the grouper biodiversity, as separate catch statistics are not reported for most species, and landings are often summarized as ‘serranids’ or ‘groupers’. This lack of species-specific catch data is due to the difficulty of identifying many of the species. The focus of this study was the tracking of molecular phylogeny of Epinephelus spp. of the family Serranidae.

The IUCN-SSC organised two regional workshops, one for West and Central Africa and one for Eastern and Southern Africa, with the intention to gather major stakeholders and to produce regional conservation strategies for the lion. It was recognized the importance of establishing a National Action Plan (NAP) for the Lion in Mozambique and realized the lack of comprehensive information for reviewing the lion profile in the country. A survey has been launched to update the conservation status of the lion in Mozambique. The final report of this survey is expected to become a comprehensive material for submission as a contribution to a forthcoming NAP workshop. The current report is the final product of the whole survey made of three phases.

The discovery of a naturalised population of Melaleuca quinquenervia in South Africa in 2009 prompted an evaluation of the species’ distribution across South Africa. We found records at seven localities in two of the nine provinces of South Africa, with naturalised populations at two sites. An additional herbarium record from Mozambique suggests that this global invader is present at other sites within the sub-region, and so while the extirpation of populations in South Africa is recommended and looks feasible, further work is required to determine the status and evaluate whether eradication from the sub-region as a whole is possible.

The examination of dental morphology of coexisting modern Aethomys namaquensis Smith , 1834 and A. chrysophilus de Winton, 1896 from Mozambique, whose diet has been studied in the field, shows that the development of stephanodont crests and the multiplication of supplementary cusps on labial side of the lower molars is associated with a mainly vegetarian diet. To the most specialized dentition corresponds the most specialized diet. The application of these results to two coexisting Aethomys species from the fossil site of Langebaanweg (Pliocene, South Africa) allows to conclude that their dental differences correspond to different paleodiets.

Bycatch of marine turtles, vulnerable or endangered species, is a growing issue of all fisheries, including Oceanic purse-seine fishery. The present paper seeks to assess marine turtle bycatch at a spatial and temporal level in the European purse seine fishery operating in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. The study was based on data collected through French and Spanish observer programs from 1995 to 2011, a period where more than 230 000 fishing sets were realized by the UE fleets in both Oceans. A total of 15 913 fishing sets were observed, including 6 515 on drifting Fish Aggregate Devices (FAD) and 9 398 on Free Swimming Schools (FSC).

Review of Baeolidia, the largest genus of Aeolidiidae (Mollusca: Nudibranchia), with the description of five new species
This paper discusses the systematics of the aeolid genus Baeolidia Bergh, 1888. To date, this monophyletic genus is the most diverse within Aeolidiidae with sixteen valid species. Excluding Baeolidia cryoporos Bouchet, 1977, the genus is restricted to the Indo-Pacific and Eastern Pacific. Species of Baeolidia show a huge intrageneric variability in several morphological characters. Only oral glands, if present, may distinguish Baeolidia from other aeolidiids genera. Five new species, Baeolidia rieae sp. nov., Baeolidia variabilis sp. nov., Baeolidia lunaris sp. nov., Baeolidia gracilis sp. nov. and Baeolidia scottjohnsoni sp. nov. are described.

The African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) is one of the carnivores the most threatened with extinction in the world (listed as “Endangered”, with criteria C2a(i), in the IUCN Red Data Book, 2008), the second most endangered (after the Ethiopian wolf, Canis simensis) of the only continent it inhabits and the first in sub-Saharan Africa. In 2004, the species has been completely extirpated from 25 of the 39 countries it once occupied. This document shows the results of the determination of African wild dog distribution and abundance in the 9 northern districts of the Sofala province, the role of extrinsic ecological factors on African wild dog population, its interactions with other carnivore and with people living in the area.

Environmental management has risen from being the task of technical natural resource specialists to being the concern of everyone on the planet. This has led to a rapid expansion in the range of jobs dealing with environmental issues. Not only are ecologists, conservationists, hunters, farmers and fishers involved; we now also have professionals in social science fields such as environmental economics, law and politics.

Widespread poverty, together with rapid population growth and inappropriate or poorly planned development, have resulted in environmental degradation and resource depletion in many areas along the coast. This has resulted in increasing conflicts among coastal inhabitants. To address issues of coastal destruction and resource overuse, better methods for environmental and natural resources management are needed. One way of increasing awareness of the need for improved coastal management at the political and executive level is to arrange seminars and workshops, where policy-makers, heads of government agencies and others can meet to discuss the issues. This volume presents the proceedings of the fourth national workshop.
