Virtual Library

The BIOFUND Virtual Library is an online archive of information on Mozambique’s biodiversity, organized along the lines suggested by the Convention on Biodiversity’s Clearing House Mechanism. The Virtual Library will strive to make available all the documents, studies, reports, articles, educational and communications materials, maps and digital files that have been produced, to serve as a repository of our collective institutional memory as a conservation community. The usefulness of the Virtual Library will improve the more we share amongst ourselves. If you have any materials that are not currently part of the Virtual Library, please click on "Add Document" and become a contributor.

WWF Mozambique

This document has been written for the management purpose of investigating various sustainable financing methods for the QNP and evaluating their potential impact over the period 2009-2019. The Business Plan begins with an overview of the park, followed by a review of the first Business Plan of the QNP from 2003 and a detailed look at the actual financial situation from both the cost and revenue side. The general conclusion reached is that due to lack of good data at the time, the 2003 Business Plan was somewhat optimistic in its revenue projections while understating actual operational costs.

The objective of this study is to examine how the extensive institutional change of reforms to policy and legislation in Mozambique over the past decade has affected evolutions at the local level in the governance of natural resources. The particular focus of the research is an analysis of a community based natural resource management (CBNRM) initiative in North Sanga District of Niassa Province and a longitudinal study of its development between 1999 and 2007 based on my involvement as both field practioner and researche

The Eastern African region is fringed w ith coral reefs and mangroves. The Indian Ocean hosts an abundant amount of fish w ith at least 3,000 varieties of shore fish. The mangrove sw amps provide oysters, crabs and mullet for the commercial market. How ever recent studies undertaken by UNEP in 1981 found that damage to coral reefs was widespread. The region is a major oil tanker route and suffers from oil pollution throughout the coastal zone. In addition land-based sources of pollution from fertilizers, industry, untreated sewage and litter and deforestation are also common resulting in problems such as eutrophication and excess sedimentation.

Ornithological surveys were carried out on Namuli Mountain (peak 2419 m) from 14-27 November 2007. Most forest on Namuli is found above 1600 or 1700 m, to c. 1900 m (with scrubby forest to 2000 m or a little higher), with the largest block of Manho Forest (at least 1000 ha) spreading over the south-western slopes of the Muretha Plateau. Mid-altitude forest on the south-eastern slopes has been greatly reduced in recent decades by fires and clearance for agriculture. Other habitats include montane grassland (rather wet and peaty), small areas of montane shrubland, rocky outcrops and large granitic domes.

It is highly productive shelf, with nutrients supplied by the rivers and adjoining abundant mangrove swamps. A single narrative about the Gorongosa Restoration Project (GRP) in Mozambique circulates widely in the popular media. This story characterises the project as an innovative intervention into an ecological crisis situation. The narrative hails the project’s aim to use profits from tourism to address the goals of both human development and conservation of biodiversity, and portrays the park project as widely embraced by long-term residents. This representation helps the project attract broad acclaim, donor funding, and socially conscious visitors, yet it obscures the early emergence of unified opposition to the project’s interventions among long-term residents of Gorongosa Mountain.

The monitoring system for Gorongosa will operate at two levels. Indicators that are reliably measured through day-to-day monitoring activities will be assessed by field scouts, tourism staff and other participating staff on Park drives, and by local communities. Indicators that require more technical or long-term scientific monitoring will be assssed by professional research staff and consultants at the Park, including extensive use of remote sensing. This document focuses on the latter level of scientific monitoring and in particular looks at the vegetation component.

Most fish enthusiasts will be well aware that Lake Malawi supports more fish species than any other lake in the world. This includes an estimated 700-1000 species of cichlid fish, almost all of them unique to the lake. Many may also have visited the lake on travels through Malawi. Not so many will be aware that over 200 kilometres of the shoreline is in Mozambique.

We present preliminary morphological and molecular taxonomic studies of the genera Rhamphochromis, Diplotaxodon and Pallidochromis, along with notes on their identification, distribution and ecology. We suggest that Rhamphochromis is comprised of eight to ten species: R. longiceps, R. woodi, R. macrophthalmus, R. esox, possibly R. ferox and four or five undescribed species. We suggest that R. lucius and R. brevis may be junior synonyms of R. woodi.
