An annotated checklist of the 271 strict-endemic taxa (235 species) and 387 near-endemic taxa (337 species) of vascular plants in Mozambique is provided. Together, these taxa constitute c. 9.3% of the total currently known flora of Mozambique and include five strict-endemic genera (Baptorhachis, Emicocarpus, Gyrodoma, Icuria and Micklethwaitia) and two near-endemic genera (Triceratella and Oligophyton). This project aims to combine existing data and expertise with targeted field survey data to identify and document Important Plant Areas (IPAs) in Mozambique, and to promote the conservation and sustainable management of these critical sites.

In this paper, we investigate whether plant diversity hotspots (based upon endemism and extinction risk of species) predict the presence of protected areas, to establish whether the development of the protected area network has been influenced by and is reflective of these hotspots. We use the Weighted Endemism including Global Endangerment index (WEGE) to quantify these plant biodiversity hotpots. We also evaluate the distribution of IPAs against the distribution of WEGE values to allow comparison with the protected area network and to better understand which IPAs are of highest conservation value.

The Mozambique Tropical Important Plant Areas project sought to promote the conservation of Mozambique's flora through the identification of Important Plant Areas (IPAs). Here, we use the Weighted Endemism including Global Endangerment (WEGE) index to identify the richest areas for rare and endemic plants in Mozambique and subsequently evaluate how well represented these hotspots are within the current protected area and IPA networks. We also examine the congruence between IPA and protected areas to identify opportunities for strengthening the conservation of plants in Mozambique. We found that high WEGE scores, representing areas rich in endemic/near-endemic and threatened species, predict the presence of IPAs in Mozambique.

Invertebrate gleaning within seagrass meadows is a common activity across eastern African communities that depend on fisheries for their livelihoods. Based on a case study of two contrasting sites, Maputo Bay (MB) and Inhambane Bay (IB), this study documents, both qualitatively and quantitatively, the gleaning activity, its value chain and stakeholders, paying particular attention to the recently created Locally Managed Marine Areas (LMMAs) within IB, boasting creativity in seagrass invertebrate fishery management. Twenty-four common edible species were identified for MB, and 15 for IB; nearly all gleaners were women and children.

This study is among the first to involve local community leaders as academic co-authors, thus highlighting the value of local ecological knowledge and community involvement, both of which are necessary for a comprehensive understanding of mangrove ecosystems. Social and ecological approaches were integrated to describe mangrove ecosystems, perceived ecosystem services and benefits to local communities. This study has identified areas of increased mangrove cover and areas with disturbance. This study shows that community initiatives for law enforcement and mangrove restoration play an important role in raising awareness and actively protecting mangroves.

This study investigates the interaction between fires and large mammal herbivores (LMH) in maintaining savanna structure. Despite the importance of these factors, there are few experiments in this context, and the relationships between environmental variation and biodiversity are poorly understood. The study manipulated the presence of LMH and fires in the dry season in a tropical African savanna, also exploring environmental variables such as soil and foliar quality, vegetation cover, and nearby water sources. After one year of experimental treatments, changes in vegetation were evident. Shrub abundance and richness and grass richness were higher in the absence of LMH, while grass biomass tripled in burned plots compared to unburned plots.

Successful protected area networks must represent biodiversity across taxonomic groups. However, too often plant species are overlooked in conservation planning, and the resulting protected areas may, as a result, fail to encompass the most important sites for plant diversity.

Cover Picture

The Niassa Game Reserve, situated between the Rovuma and Lugenda rivers in northern Mozambique, is considered one of the country's most spectacular areas in terms of wildlife and scenery. The area's value has again been confirmed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) with its emphasis on rehabilitating areas of greatest biodiversity, rating it highly suitable for funding. The equally spectacular buffer zone, some 40kms wide, stretching east of the confluence of the Rovuma River from Negomana to Mussoma, has a diverse fauna in pristine habitats. The area has considerable potential for the development of a long-term Multiple Resource Use Area (MRUA), a management approach based on natural resource sustainability.

Organisms Diversity & Evolution

The nudibranch known as the Spanish dancer, Hexabranchus sanguineus, is a classic example with over 200 years of taxonomic confusion. More than 30 synonyms have been proposed for H. sanguineus and even a separate genus for H. morsomus. Here we present, for the first time a comprehensive review of all proposed names and an integrative taxonomic review of the genus, including morphological and molecular data. The Our results reveal that H. sanguineus is a complex of five species: four previously described and one undescribed species, one of the largest nudibranchs in the world: Hexabranchus giganteus sp. nov. The genus Caribranchus is considered a junior synonym of Hexabranchus Ehrenberg, 1828, and the ontogeny of the color and the ontogen

DIVERSITY, DISTRIBUTION, ECOLOGY AND CONSERVATION STATUS OF THE FAMILY SYNGNATHIDAE IN SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA AND ADJACENT ISLANDSCLAASSENS L., HODGSON A.N., SHORT G. & HARASTI D.2022

N/A

The overarching aim of this review is to evaluate the current state of knowledge of syngnathids in sub-Saharan Africa and adjacent islands. Here, all available literature on southern African syngnathids and adjacent islands has been collated to investigate research effort and focus across this part of the African continent. This is followed by a detailed review of syngnathid diversity in sub- Saharan Africa and adjacent islands to verify occurrence records and distributions. Ecological information on syngnathids within the region is synthesized on habitat use, life histories, reproduction, feeding and predation, and behaviour. Major threats and conservation actions will be reviewed within an African context. Lastly, research gaps and future

Oceanography and Marine Biology: An Annual Review

The charismatic Syngnathidae occur in coastal and freshwater environments across the globe and play an important role by acting as flagship species for conservation. Despite this status, many syngnathids are threatened by a range of anthropogenic impacts including exploitation and habitat destruction. In addition, the cryptic nature and generally low population densities of syngnathids make research and related conservation action difficult, which can lead to data gaps. The gap in knowledge of the biology and status of syngnathids is especially acute within Africa. This review provides the first synthesis of syngnathid diversity, biogeography, ecology, threats and conservation in sub-Saharan Africa and adjacent islands.

Longline Environment

Tour guides represent the forefront of responsible Cetacean-Based Tourism (CBT), client satisfaction and product development. How an operation and specifically the guide facilitates the activity can shape tourists’ attitudes and change their behaviour towards the environment, turning consumers into stewards of the environment. This study examined the validity and success of a guide training workshop for CBT operators in the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve (PPMR), Mozambique. A questionnaire survey was implemented pre- and post-training to measure the operators’ knowledge of aspects related to CBT and attitudes towards sustainable tourism and local regulations.

Effects of dolphin-swim activities on the behaviour of an Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin population off the south coast of MozambiqueRocha Diana, MarleySarah A., Drakeford Benjamin, Potts Jonathan, Gullan Angie.2023

Maputo (cidade)

Swim-with-dolphin (SWD) activities are popular but can negatively impact target populations. It is important to consider the behavioural responses of dolphins, and quantify the impact on individuals and populations, as well as maximise opportunities for sustainable tourism that benefits socio-economic growth while encouraging proenvironmental behaviour. This is of relevance in `developing countries, where ecological studies are scarce and tourism industries may have developed before science-based management measures were implemented. This study aimed to determine the effects of SWD tourism on the behaviour of resident Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops aduncus) in the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve (PPMR), Mozambique.

Cetacean-Based Tourism (CBT) is often confused with sustainable tourism. However, not every CBT operator has an environmental education component attached to its programme. In reality, CBT has the potential to negatively impact the animals it is targeting; thus management is required to mitigate any harmful effects from tourism activities. This paper analyses the attitudes and perceptions of the marine operators and tourists that partake in dolphin-swim activities in the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve (PPMR) in Mozambique.
