The Marromeu Complex (11,270 km²) covers the southern half of the Zambezi Delta and the adjacent Cheringoma escarpment, and includes the Marromeu Buffalo Reserve (Reserva Especial de Marromeu) and two forest reserves (Reserva Floresta de Nhampacué and R.F. de Inhamitanga), four hunting concessions (Coutada Oficial no. 10, 11, 12, and 14), large commercial agricultural lands (notably the Sena Estates, the largest sugar plantation in Mozambique), and community lands. In November 2003, the Government of Mozambique ratified the Ramsar Convention and designated the Marromeu Complex as the country’s first and only Wetland of International Importance because of its vast size and immense value for biodiversity, ecosystem services.

A Reserva Nacional de Marromeu (RNM), foi criada através do Diploma Legislativo no 1995 de 23 de Julho de 1960, com a designação de Reserva Especial de Protecção de Búfalos de Marromeu. Esta tem uma extensão de 1500 km2. O objectivo inicial da criação da RNM foi o de proteger a população do búfalo Africano (Syncerus caffer).

A contagem aérea de fauna bravia foi realizada no Complexo de Marromeu (CM) de 28 de Novembro a 04 de Dezembro de 2016, no fim da estação seca. A contagem tinha como objectivos: (i) obter estimativas suficientemente precisas do tamanho das populações de espécies de fauna bravia, incluindo carcaças de elefante, (ii) determinar a distribuição espacial de espécies de fauna bravia, (iii) documentar o tipo e distribuição espacial de actividades humanas, e (iv) mapear a vegetação e as áreas afectadas pelo desmatamento (perda de habitat).

Much international attention was given to the discovery of the forest and associated
biodiversity of Mt Mabu in Zambézia Province of north-central Mozambique in late 2008 and 2009 (Timberlake et al. 2012, Bayliss et al. 2014), although the actual "discovery" of the
mountain by scientists was in 2005 (Spottiswoode et al. 2008, Timberlake et al. 2012).
Following this international attention many calls have been made for its conservation (e.g.
Bayliss et al. 2014), not least in that it was not, and is still not, under any form of formal
protection.

The present management plan is not a static document and will be changed from time to time to reflect bioresource use trends and new resource information acquired through both monitoring and scientific researches, and possible changes in local attitudes and perceptions during its implementation. Because of the planning involved inter-disciplinary scientific studies and open and interactive participatory meetings, the review process will also requires a similar transparent method. In particular, the day-by-day management experience and constant relationships with local communities would provide even new information for reviewing the management plan.

The needs of different organisations vary considerably, but it seems that most botanical databases record information related principally to politically defined countries. The same can be said for storage of specimens in herbaria, and for citation of specimens in taxonomic revisions. However, political countries vary greatly in size, from less than one square kilometre (Vatican City) to over 22 million square kilometres covering one sixth of the world’s surface area (U.S.S.R.). Furthermore, many of them include physically remote parts, particularly islands, and nearly all traditional continental boundaries are traversed by political countries.

In many ways, 2013 was a very challenging year for WIOMSA with key constitutional activities such as the election of the members of the WIOMSA Board of Trustees, the Fifth WIOMSA General Assembly and the amendment of the Constitution all taking place in the same year. In addition to these there was also the organization of the Eighth WIOMSA Scientific Symposium in Maputo and the fact that 2013 was the first full year of implementation of the new MASMA Programme “Coping with Global Change, Consolidating the Gains”. Yet the year ended on a far more optimistic note than perhaps many had expected.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PENNDOT) District 3-0 initiated a study in North Central Pennsylvania evaluating existing bridges and culverts for use as underpasses by wildlife. This project was a two-phase study to investigate animal passage through existing drainage box culverts, arch culverts and bridges on existing highway systems. The objective of this study was to (1) determine whether wildlife are using existing structures as passageways based on wildlife sign and remote camera monitoring and (2) determine underpass dimensions, interior characteristics, location, topography, and adjacent habitat features that contribute to and enhance usage of underpass corridors by wildlife.

Wildlife use of existing culverts and bridges in North Central Pennsylvania
Undiscovered cancer treatments from marine organisms could be worth between US$563 billion (€428.5 billion) and US $5.69 trillion (€4.33 trillion), according to a recent study. The researchers estimate that there may be as many as 594,232 novel compounds waiting to be discovered in unstudied marine species, and that these could lead to between 55 and 214 new anti-cancer drugs. The study only accounted for anti-cancer drug revenues. In reality, these chemicals from the sea can have numerous other biomedical applications including antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral and anti-inflammatory uses.

East African Wildlife Properties Ltd has been charged with the responsibility of managing, the recently approved, Vilanculos Coastal Wildlife Sanctuary (VCWS) in Mozambique’s Inhambane Province. As custodians of the sanctuary they are in the process of establishing a biodiversity and conservation management plan that would encompass the marine, terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems. In this endeavour they seek to apply the principle of “conservation through utilisation” by means of the sustainable and profitable commercial use of the Sanctuary’s natural resources to the benefit of both the Company and of the local people residing in the Sanctuary.

The conservation and management of many marine mammal species is largely dependent on monitoring population status by conducting aerial surveys from manned aircraft. Recent developments in the technical capacity and civilian use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) have led to some investigations into the potential use of these systems for aerial surveys of marine mammals.

Phase III was initiated in January 2004 and continues on from the previous phases I and II, which identified and addressed the environmental issues, linked with the legacy of historical drill cuttings piles in the North Sea. Phase III supports UK government obligations to OIC/OSPAR for continued collection of data relating to actual environmental impacts from cuttings piles over time. Phase III is focussing on the long-term impacts from 5 selected cuttings piles on the UKCS. Data from OLF studies of surveys on the Norwegian Continental Shelf between 1990 to 2002 has also been included in the Phase III work.
