Mangroves are recognized for their numerous ecosystem services and functions that are critical to environmental health and human wellbeing in the regions where they occur and beyond. Although mangroves comprise only 0.7% of the world’s tropical forests, they have been shown to contain globally-significant carbon pools, storing up to five times more carbon than typical upland tropical forests per area. As a result, there is interest in considering mangroves in national climate adaptation and mitigation strategies, yet little research related to climate change and carbon sequestration has been completed in mangroves, especially in Africa.

Over the past decade, China has become the main export destination for Mozambican timber. This market reconfiguration has come with growing criticism of ethnic Chinese actors from Mainland China and elsewhere, who have been accused of being the origin of ecologically deleterious illegal logging and trade. In this context, the aim of this article is to examine the timber concession and licensing schemes in Mozambique, the main instruments governing logging operations, and to investigate behavioural differences between Chinese and non-Chinese commercial actors with regard to these instruments.

We estimate the wealth of Mozambique in 2000 and 2005 in order to assess the sustainability of its development path. Our methodology builds on Arrow et al. (2007). We show that Mozambican growth is driven mainly by human and physical capital accumulation, while the pressure on natural capital remains low. Moreover, changes in knowledge and institutions significantly enhance the outcome of the different capital assets while population growth has a strong downward effect on wealth per capita. In the end, we conclude that Mozambique, unlike many other sub-Saharan countries, followed a sustainable growth path in recent times.

Though there are notable exceptions, there is still a weak treatment in the literature of the problems of, and solutions to, wildlife crime from an anti-corruption perspective. Identifying and promoting effective interventions that get to the heart of the corruption problems associated with wildlife crime is a shared responsibility across the wildlife conservation, anti-corruption, anti-illicit trade, and anti-organized crime communities.

Various fi nancial mechanisms exist to support Protected Areas (PA) and/or PA systems. Among them are Conservation Trust Funds (CTFs). CTFs are institutions that can manage various fi nancing mechanisms including, but not limited to, endowment funds, sinking funds, revolving funds, or debt- for-nature swaps. Other fi nancial mechanisms have been applied to support PA or PA systems such as traditional short-term donor project support, government budget allocations, taxes and park revenues, etc. All these fi nancial mechanisms can strategically complement each other and should act in synergy within the framework of a comprehensive fi nancial strategy.

The project on Sustainable Financing of Mozambique’s Protected Areas of the World Wide Fund for Nature aims to serve as a catalyst to support the development of a national sustainable financing strategy for the national protected area network. In order to achieve financial sustainability for this network, Mafisa Media was commissioned to undertake an analysis of the current costs and financing mechanisms of Mozambique’s protected areas, based on existing information. The work entailed a review of business plans, analysis of financial requirements, financing and status of PAs, and the development of a consolidated financial model that summarised current costs and revenue, projected future costs and financing gaps.

Mozambique is a country of abundant natural resources, counting among its assets arable land in ten different agro-ecological zones (12% only being cultivated), hydropower potential from its many rivers, forests, fisheries, gas, and other subsoil assets (such as coal and heavy sands). The country’s forestry potential is under-utilized, though its highly valuable species stocks are being depleted. The country’s biodiversity, with its many endemic species, will certainly be a key asset for the Ministry of Tourism’s ecotourism ambitions.

This is driven by China’s phenomenal economic growth (over 9% annual GDP growth in the past two decades), its large population base and its massive processing capacity, as well as global demand for furniture, paper and other wood products. This is equivalent to some 1 million ha of mature commercial forests outside China being cleared each year.

O presente documento apresenta 4 (quatro) acções consideradas urgentes para a criação de capacidade nacional de lidar com a variabilidade e mudanças climáticas. As acções distribuem-se em vários sectores de desenvolvimento económico e social, destacando-se, os seguintes: prevenção de desastres naturais orientado para o Sistema de Alerta e Aviso Prévio, o sector agrário, a zona costeira orientada para várias actividades com destaque para a erosão e pesca, o sector de água particularmente no âmbito de mudanças do clima, o sector de energia e o ambiente.

O presente Plano de Acção é um complemento da Estratégia Nacional de REDD+ em Moçambique. O mesmo foi preparado com o apoio de técnicos de vários sectores e actores do Estado, da Sociedade Civil e do Sector privado (representados no Comité Técnico de Revisão e no Grupo Inter-Institucional para as Mudanças Climáticas), os quais facilitaram o alinhamento do Plano de Acção com as políticas e programas sectoriais.

The studied species were ncurri (Icuria dunensis Wieringa), ntholo (Pseudolachnostylis maprounaefolia Pax), metil (Sterculia appendiculata K. Schum), namuno (Acacia nigrescens Oliv.) and muanga (Pericopsis angolensis Meeuwen).

There appears to be reasonable knowledge about the types and extent of forest and vegetation cover in Mozambique. Woody vegetation is said to cover between 70 and 80 per cent of the total land area of the country; up to 62 million hectares (Boyd et al., 2000; FAO, 2005; MICOA, 1997b).

Mozambique is a large country with a total area of close to 800 000 km2. The population is concentrated in the southern provinces of Maputo, Gaza and Inhambane and in Zambezia and Nampula in the center- north. Current figures put the Mozambican population at a little more than 18 million. Mozambique’s beaches along its 2 700 kilometers of coastline, and its once abundant wildlife have drawn visitors since the colonial era. People from over the world came to one of the richest game parks in Southern Africa, Gorongosa National Park, which was considered to be the showpiece of colonial Mozambique’s conservation effort (Massinga, 1996), and several other hunting areas one of which is nowadays part of Limpopo National Park.

Climate Change projections indicate that the world temperature is increasing continuously. According to the Third Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC, 2001), the global average temperature will increase by 1.4° C to 5.8° C between 1990 and 2100 if the levels of emissions are not reduced. This is largely attributed to the anthropogenic activities especially the use of fossil fuels in the developed world. Developing countries are considered to be the ones suffering more from the effects of climate change and African countries are even more vulnerable due to their dependence on natural resources.

Por outro lado, pretende-se também elevar a sensibilidade de todos envolvidos na gestão e conservação dos recursos florestais em relação ao eminente perigo da mudanças climáticas sobre o sector e a biodiversidade em Moçambique.
