Virtual Library

The BIOFUND Virtual Library is an online archive of information on Mozambique’s biodiversity, organized along the lines suggested by the Convention on Biodiversity’s Clearing House Mechanism. The Virtual Library will strive to make available all the documents, studies, reports, articles, educational and communications materials, maps and digital files that have been produced, to serve as a repository of our collective institutional memory as a conservation community. The usefulness of the Virtual Library will improve the more we share amongst ourselves. If you have any materials that are not currently part of the Virtual Library, please click on "Add Document" and become a contributor.

Biodiversity is a vital pillar for the development of Mozambique and for the support of the majority of the Mozambican population. It is therefore important that the development based on a sustainable basis in, which the intrinsic value of biodiversity is recognized, valued and preserved through the generations. Thus, it is relevant to define strategic management and conservation measures of national biodiversity.

Interactions between small cetaceans and the purse-seine fishery in western Portuguese waters2007Wise, L. Et al.

SCIENTIA MARINA

Marine mammal interactions with Portuguese purse-seine fisheries operating in four different ports (Figueira da Foz, Sesimbra, Setúbal, Sines) were studied (July-October 2003). Observers accompanied commercial fishing vessels and monitored 48 fishing trips. An interview survey of skippers was also carried out (n = 36). Three species of marine mammals were observed in 31 sightings during the commercials trips but only the species Delphinus delphis and the category Delphinidae were observed to interact with fishing activities. Small cetaceans were observed to sink, gather or disperse school fishes and damage gear.

Collaborative Actions for Sustainable Tourism (Coast) Project: Reef and Marine Recreation Management (Rmrm) Thematic AreaMclean, B. Et al.2014

This document was developed in a participatory manner. The underlying philosophy is that in a complex context such as the TBT area with its multiple users, stakeholders and managers, management must be approached in a participative, collaborative and transparent manner. It is important to bear in mind that sustainably managing marine tourism in the TBT area is a process - it will not happen instantaneously, but will progress over time if driven collaboratively by the members of the DSMC and other key stakeholders

The whale shark Rhincodon typus is an endangered, highly migratory species with a wide, albeit patchy, distribution through tropical oceans. Ten aerial survey flights along the southern Mozambican coast, conducted between 2004–2008, documented a relatively high density of whal sharks along a ~200 km stretch of the Inhambane Province, with a pronounced hotspot adjacent to Praia do Tofo.

nta rays are iconic species important for global marine heritage. They are also recognized as globally threatened species by the IUCN- listed as vulnerable to extinction. The coast of southern Mozambique has been identified as the most important aggregation site for both recognized species of manta rays in Africa. These gentle giants represent economically important drawcards for coastal tourism with a current estimated value of the US$12.7 million per year in direct revenue to dive operators in the Inhambane Province and an overall direct economic impact (including associated tourism expenditures) of US$39.5 million annually.

MARINE ECOLOGY PROGRESS SERIES

Sightings of planktivorous elasmobranchs at their coastal aggregation sites are often linked to biological, environmental and temporal variables. Many large planktivorous elasmobranchs are also globally threatened species, so it is necessary to try and separate population trends from environmentally driven, short-term fluctuations. We investigated the influence of environmental variables on sightings of 3 species of planktivorous elasmobranchs off Praia do Tofo, Mozambique: the reef manta ray Manta alfredi, giant manta ray M. birostris and whale shark Rhincodon typus.

This is one of the first comprehensive aerial census undertaken of large herbivores occurring in Maputo Special Reserve. The aerial census was undertaken during the beginning of November 2006, although late in the season very little rain had fallen. The overall aim of the census was to derive current status of the most important large herbivore populations in Maputo Special Reserve, which could be useful in management decisions and would stand as a record of abundance for future trend analyses. In addition, the survey undertaken aims to record the spatial distribution of the most important herbivores with emphasis on the elephant population so as to gain a better understanding of their habitat relations, but also to gain an understanding

The aerial census was undertaken towards the end of September 2016, and the overall aim was to determine the current status of some of the most abundant large herbivore species in Maputo Special Reserve. Some concern continues to prevail regarding the re-introduced species, and so it was important to undertake an aerial census in 2016 to determine the status of these populations, as well as to continue gathering long-term data regarding the species’ trends. The census also provides information on the spatial distribution of the game populations, which in turn provides information on the habitat use of the species.
