The BIOFUND Virtual Library is an online archive of information on Mozambique’s biodiversity, organized along the lines suggested by the Convention on Biodiversity’s Clearing House Mechanism. The Virtual Library will strive to make available all the documents, studies, reports, articles, educational and communications materials, maps and digital files that have been produced, to serve as a repository of our collective institutional memory as a conservation community. The usefulness of the Virtual Library will improve the more we share amongst ourselves. If you have any materials that are not currently part of the Virtual Library, please click on "Add Document" and become a contributor.

Department of Agriculture, Forest Service
We present an annotated bibliography that provides information on and reference to the literature on outdoor recreation use valuation studies. This information is presented by study source, benefit measures, recreation activity, valuation methodology, and USDA Forest Service region. Tables are provided that reference the bibliography for each activity, enabling easy location of studies. The literature review spans 1967 to 1998 and covers 21 recreation activities plus a category for wilderness recreation. There are 163 individual studies referenced, providing 760 benefit measures. Guidelines are provided for applying the various benefit transfer methods.

The Importance of Sample Discrimination in Using the Travel Cost Method to Estimate the Benefits of Improved Water Quality
The travel cost method is a widely used technique for the valuation of recreation sites in the absence of organized markets. While it has been shown theoretically (Freeman 1979; Feenberg and Mills 1980) and empirically (Stevens 1966; Reiling et al. 1973) how travel cost can also be used to estimate the benefits from an improvement in environmental quality at a recreation site, the method is faced with a basic problem. Suppose the quality of recreation at a site has become degraded by pollution to the extent that many recreationists have shifted their water recreation to other substitute sites.

Ecosystem services are the benefits people obtain from ecosystems (examples are listed in Table 1). Some of these, such as the provisioning services (or goods) like food, timber and fresh water, are well-known and routinely included in assessments. Others, such as the regulating services of carbon storage and sequestration, watershed protection, storm protection, pollination, or the cultural services of recreation and spiritual values, are often overlooked in policies, plans and programmes (PPP) preparation because they are not traded in the market and internalized in traditional cost-benefit analyses.

The last two years have seen the idea of a “green economy” float out of its specialist moorings in environmental economics and into the mainstream of policy discourse. It is found increasingly in the words of heads of state and finance ministers, in the text of G20 communiqués, and discussed in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication

The aim of this guide is threefold. Firstly, it explains the relationship between biodiversity, ecosystem services and the oil and gas industry. Secondly, it provides a set of checklists to help identify the main ecosystem service dependencies and impacts of oil and gas developments. Thirdly, it highlights key associated risks and opportunities for oil and gas companies, and provides guidance on potential measures for managing them.

Methodology for Estimating Reductions of GHG Emissions from Mosaic Deforestation
Quantifying the causes of deforestation and degradation and creating transparent REDDþ baselines: A method and case study from central Mozambique
Ryan, C.; Berry, N. & Joshi, N.
2015
Manica; Sofala; Tete; Zambézia
Reductions in deforestation and forest degradation are advocated as a means to mitigate climate change. The formulation and implementation of policies to achieve such reductions requires an understanding of current and historic land-use change and associated greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, it is often proposed that any reduction in emissions be measured against a reference scenario that describes future land-use in the absence of intervention. However, the information needed to progress this agenda is rarely available, as robust data on the extent and causes of land-use change, and the associated changes in carbon stocks, are sparse, particularly in African woodlands.

The purpose of this guidebook is to assist project developers in evaluating and selecting those VCS approved methodology(ies) that are best suited to account for the GHG benefits of their proposed REDD project activities. It contains a summary of VCS requirements applicable to all REDD projects and a detailed review of those REDD methodologies approved under the VCS at the time of writing. It also provides a number of tools for developers to compare the applicability conditions, accounting approaches, and resource requirements associated with each methodology, and suggestions for applying these methodologies in practice.

Conservation Areas and their buffer areas are an important source of livelihood for rural populations and their contribution to poverty reduction can be increased. Many CAs and their buffer areas are characterized by high miombo woodland cover and high poverty rates, especially those in the central and the northeast coastal regions of the country, or harbour important marine resources. These woodland and marine areas supply basic needs for large numbers of people whose livelihoods could be improved through various opportunities for the rural poor to move out of poverty.

ZOOLOGISCHE MEDEDELINGEN
In 1959 the first author (A.C.v.B.) discovered a peculiar snail of the pulmonate family Endodontidae in Rhodesia; on a subsequent expedition more specimens were obtained, so that a series is now available for descrip tion. The species undoubtedly belongs to the genus Trachycystis Pilsbry, 1893, but a new subgenus has to be created in order to accomodate this particular species. Anatomical data and figures have been supplied by the second author (B.V.), while the first author is responsible for the re maining part of text and figures.

This project refers only to seismic surveys and exploration drilling of wells in shallow waters mainly less than 200m in depth in Offshore Area 1, as well as the coastal waters present within the concession area of the adjacent Onshore Block. The main objective of the project is to determine if the prospects, identified after the seismic surveys and exploration drilling, have hydrocarbons in commercial quantities. The seismic survey will allow the identification of prospects for exploration drilling, using acoustic energy to map the structure of the earth’s crust below the seafloor. Exploration drilling is a temporary activity aimed to determine the presence of hydrocarbons.

The first National report on the Conservation of Biological Diversity in Mozambique has been prepared in accordance with Article 26 of the Convention of Biological Diversity which requires. Parties to prepare periodic reports measures taken to implement CBD provisions and fhe effectiveness of such measures. The Report covers implementation activities carried out during 7997 and highlights the current status of biodiversity in Mozambique, trends in biodiversity, institutional and legal framework for conservation and the formulation of a draft National Strategy and Action Plan.

The aim of this report is to capture the lessons learned during a joint visit to Mozambique by teams from IFAD and the Secretariat of the Global Land Tools Network (GLTN), organised as part of the Tenure Security Learning Initiative - Eastern & Southern Africa (TSLI-ESA). It is one of a number of reports on country visits, the objective of which is to develop a better understanding of the tenure issues faced by IFAD-supported projects in these countries and to examine some of the tools and strategies adopted to deal with these. These visits form part of the overall strategy of the TSLI-ESA, which is to identify common issues and to enhance lesson sharing and knowledge management on land-related tools amongst the various projects.

Status and community-based conservation of marine turtles in the northern Querimbas Islands (Mozambique)

Oryx
Situated in the northernmost part of Mozambique, the northern Querimbas Islands support some of the most diverse and pristine coral reefs in the Western Indian Ocean. The community-based turtle conservation programme that we developed on Vamizi Island has facilitated the identification and protection of a key nesting site for the green marine turtle Chelonia mydas in Mozambique, with a mean of 122 nests per year. The area is also used by nesting female and immature hawksbill turtles Eretmochelys imbricata. Nesting activity of green turtles was observed all year round, with a peak in the summer (February–March). Incubation periods of this species showed seasonal fluctuations inversely correlated with air temperature.
