The Niassa Game Reserve, situated between the Rovuma and Lugenda rivers in northern Mozambique, is considered one of the country's most spectacular areas in terms of wildlife and scenery. The area's value has again been confirmed by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) with its emphasis on rehabilitating areas of greatest biodiversity, rating it highly suitable for funding. The equally spectacular buffer zone, some 40kms wide, stretching east of the confluence of the Rovuma River from Negomana to Mussoma, has a diverse fauna in pristine habitats. The area has considerable potential for the development of a long-term Multiple Resource Use Area (MRUA), a management approach based on natural resource sustainability.

The nudibranch known as the Spanish dancer, Hexabranchus sanguineus, is a classic example with over 200 years of taxonomic confusion. More than 30 synonyms have been proposed for H. sanguineus and even a separate genus for H. morsomus. Here we present, for the first time a comprehensive review of all proposed names and an integrative taxonomic review of the genus, including morphological and molecular data. The Our results reveal that H. sanguineus is a complex of five species: four previously described and one undescribed species, one of the largest nudibranchs in the world: Hexabranchus giganteus sp. nov. The overarching aim of this review is to evaluate the current state of knowledge of syngnathids in sub-Saharan Africa and adjacent islands. Here, all available literature on southern African syngnathids and adjacent islands has been collated to investigate research effort and focus across this part of the African continent. This is followed by a detailed review of syngnathid diversity in sub- Saharan Africa and adjacent islands to verify occurrence records and distributions. Ecological information on syngnathids within the region is synthesized on habitat use, life histories, reproduction, feeding and predation, and behaviour. Oceanography and Marine Biology: An Annual Review
The charismatic Syngnathidae occur in coastal and freshwater environments across the globe and play an important role by acting as flagship species for conservation. Despite this status, many syngnathids are threatened by a range of anthropogenic impacts including exploitation and habitat destruction. In addition, the cryptic nature and generally low population densities of syngnathids make research and related conservation action difficult, which can lead to data gaps. The gap in knowledge of the biology and status of syngnathids is especially acute within Africa. This review provides the first synthesis of syngnathid diversity, biogeography, ecology, threats and conservation in sub-Saharan Africa and adjacent islands.

How an operation and specifically the guide facilitates the activity can shape tourists’ attitudes and change their behaviour towards the environment, turning consumers into stewards of the environment. This study examined the validity and success of a guide training workshop for CBT operators in the Ponta do Ouro Partial Marine Reserve (PPMR), Mozambique. A questionnaire survey was implemented pre- and post-training to measure the operators’ knowledge of aspects related to CBT and attitudes towards sustainable tourism and local regulations.

This work aimed to characterize the fires regime at the Marromeu Complex between the years 2002 to 2019. The data from MODIS sensor data, collection 6 (MCD14ML, MCD64A1) were used. The data were processed with the ArcGis 10.2 software and the statistical analysis was realized using in the Statgraphic plus 5.0 package. The results showed that around 73% of the Marromeu Complex burned between 2002 to 2019. In the same period, 12227 hot spots were detected with an average of 679 fires on an annual basis. The determining factors for the burning regime are: temperature, precipitation, proximity to highways, slope, population density, vegetation cover and altitude. The model generated explains about 80.91% of the intensity of fires in the Compex.

Biodiversity conservation traditionally necessitates setting aside land, which frequently impacts local communities. Although progress has been made on how to optimize this process, conflict frequently emerges when conservation and community goals are at odds. Botanical surveys on the São Sebastião Peninsula have been limited to date. Over the past six years, extensive surveys have been conducted in the coastal zone of southern Mozambique by Alice Massingue as part of her Ph.D. studies, which revealed that this northern part of Inhambane is particularly rich in plant diversity and endemism. However, due to time and logistic constraints, the São Sebastião Peninsula was not included in Dr. Massingue’s surveys. This fieldwork was carried out with the purpose of providing a preliminarily survey of the occurrence of endemic and near-endemic; species of high conservation concern, or of socio-economic importance; threatened habitats and critical sites for these species and exotic and invasive plants.
