A recent analysis highlights the potential of natural products as an indispensable source for drug discovery. Natural compounds can be used directly as potential medicines or can provide templates for the design of synthetic and semi-synthetic drugs. Furthermore, because of their ability to interact selectively with biological macromolecules, they also provide a tool to better understand biochemical processes and thus identify new potential targets for the treatment of human diseases.

The occurrence of extreme climate events in Mozambique constitutes a great barrier to swift sustainable economic development due to human and material damages. This includes the loss of crops due to extreme events, which can occur at least once a year. As a result, the population lives in a situation of threat and instability. The Government of Mozambique (GM), Non-governmental Organisations (NGOs), and Humanitarian Agencies (HA) have been working to reduce the impacts of extreme events through the elaboration of various action plans and programmes.

Although previous road-kill surveys have tallied the number and kinds of vertebrates that were victims of vehicular traffic (mostly birds and mammals), none has recorded invertebrate mortality. A 14-month survey on foot of each side of a 1.6 km (1 mi) stretch of dual lane highway provided 188 vertebrate and 1,162 invertebrate victims. Finding rare and unusual species of invertebrates suggests that this technique be used as a supplementary faunal survey.

Mangrove establishment and rehabilitation projects have had varying levels of success at different locations around the world. Given the money that has been invested in restoring mangrove coverage, it is useful to map, monitor and compare results and experiences in different parts of the globe to compare the success of such projects. This study conducted temporal analyses for 24 mangrove sites from 10 different projects in six different countries (Senegal, the United Arab Emirates, Madagascar, Kenya, Solomon Island and Indonesia) using satellite imagery and GIS technology to map and monitor their status.

Roads built through or near wetlands cause significant mortality of reptiles and amphibians and create barriers to migration and dispersal. I investigated the number of times turtles and other herpetofauna attempted to cross a 4-lane highway at Lake Jackson, Florida, USA, during a period of severe drought (Feb–Apr 2000). Levels of road mortality were so high that I designed and installed a temporary drift fence system to work with an existing drainage culvert and for the next 2.5 years I evaluated its effectiveness at reducing road mortality and facilitating migration.

The middle to late 1990s saw the proliferation of medium term expenditure frameworks (MTEFs) throughout the developing world. By one count (World Bank, 2001: 6) as many as twenty five countries in Africa, Asia (eastern, central, and southern), Latin America, and Eastern Europe are at various stages in the process of adopting MTEFs, and another ten are seriously considering it.1 This proliferation has occurred over a relatively short time period. Of the twenty-five existing MTEFs, nearly 90% were adopted over the five-year period, 1997-2001. It is not premature to say that MTEFs are a trend in developing country public expenditure management (PEM), and the trend shows no signs of cresting.

Ion Geophysical (Ion) plans to conduct a geophysical (seismic reflection/refraction) survey and related vessel operations in the Alaskan Beaufort and Chukchi seas from October–December 2012. The primary survey area extends from the U.S.–Canadian border in the east to Point Barrow in the west. Two survey lines extend west of Point Barrow into the northern Chukchi Sea and three short tie lines are proposed near the U.S.–Russian border (Fig. 1). The bathymetry of the proposed survey area ranges from shallow (~20 m) to relatively deep (>3500 m) water over the continental shelf, the continental slope, and the abyssal plain.

They underpin and make possible all forms of economic activity. Damage to components of biodiversity have economic consequences, the impacts of which fall most heavily on the poor. In few contexts is this as clear as in the case of mangrove ecosystems and their dependent human populations.

Mangroves are plants that consist of a variety of growth forms, from trees, palms, shrubs, vines, epiphytes, samphires, grasses and ferns. Mangroves form valuable ecosystems along environments. Typical mangrove habitats are periodically subjected to tidal influences. Mangroves grow in soil that is frequently waterlogged by saline water. The first explorers described them as ‘forests of the sea’ (Mastaller 1997). Mangrove Plants (Flora) refers to many plant growth forms that are associated with mangrove ecosystems including vines, grasses, shrubs, chenopods, sedges, forbs, palms, ferns and parasitic plants (Mastaller 1997).

Intertidal mangrove swamp communities dominate the world’s tropical and subtropical coasts, paralleling the geographical distribution of coral reefs. They survive in substrate salinities ranging from fresh water alongside rivers to hypersaline ponds and mudflats. Mangrove plants are pioneer as well as mature-phase species. They not only help form these environments, they create habitats for a diverse and characteristic community, including numerous mangrove-dependent organisms. The term “mangrove” refers to an ecological rather than a taxonomic assemblage of plants. Worldwide, 34 species or so in nine genera in five families are considered “true mangroves” and another 80 or so species occur as “minor components” and “mangrove associates.”

Solitary, elusive cats like the tiger (Panthera tigris) and snow leopard (Uncia uncia) are notoriously difficult to enumerate. Indirect techniques using pugmarks or other sign produce ambiguous information that does not directly correlate to abundance since many factors influence snow leopard travel patterns and marking behavior. Furthermore, considering the remote and rugged landscapes inhabited by snow leopards, it is hardly surprising that our knowledge of the status of this endangered species and its occupied range is very limited.

Such systems enable continuous, long-time and repercussion-free surveillance of selected areas in the field. The performance characteristics of a conventional VHS video-tape system are compared to a digital video recording system. The recordings were used to develop daily and annual plots of occurrence for the different species and to display the preferences for darkness, twilight and light phase by the different species over the year.

Consultation with Nova Scotia Department of Environment and Labour (NSDEL), the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources (NSDNR) and the Nova Scotia Museum (NSM) was conducted to arrive at an appropriate scope of work that would satisfy the requirements of all of the parties involved, with direct regard for the Minister’s requirement for additional information. The guidelines have been written for activities on the United Kingdom Continental Shelf (UKCS) and are aimed at reducing the risk of injury to negligible levels and can also potentially reduce the risk of disturbance from seismic surveys to marine mammals including seals, whales, dolphins and porpoises. Whilst there are no objections to these guidelines being used elsewhere JNCC would encourage all operators to determine if any special or local circumstances pertain, as we would not wish these guidelines to be used where a local management tool has already been adopted (for instance in the Gulf of Mexico OCS Region).

These guidelines have been written for activities on the United Kingdom Continental Shelf (UKCS), and are aimed at reducing the risk of injury to negligible levels and potentially reduce the risk of disturbance from explosive activities to marine mammals including seals, whales, dolphins and porpoises. The use of explosives in the marine environment ranges from inshore activities such as harbour construction to offshore operations such as wellhead or platform decommissioning, and includes research, commercial and military activities, all of which have the potential to impact upon marine mammals.
