N/A

This Toolkit has been prepared to support the design and implementation of Sustainable Land Management (SLM) programs. The specific purpose of the Toolkit is: to inform the user of the approaches that can be followed to analyze and value the economic costs of land degradation and the benefits of sustainable land management. ‘Land’ is interpreted broadly in the Toolkit, also including wetlands and coastal zones. The Toolkit follows the general approach of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (2003, 2005). Among others, this means that the Toolkit considers the broad range of benefits provided by agricultural and natural ecosystems, including provisioning, regulation and cultural services

Monetary values of environmental and social externalities for the purpose of cost-benefit analysis in the EFORWOOD projectProkofieva, I. Et al.2005

N/A

The objective of the present document is to summarise the work on the monetary valuation of environmental and social externalities in the WP1.5 within the EFORWOOD project. The monetary estimates presented in this document form the core of the cost-benefit analysis implemented in the TOSIA-E software package developed during the project. The report partially builds on the previous deliverable PD1.5.1., which laid ground to this work by discussing the most important externalities that could potentially be included in the valuation process and suggesting the adequate indicators to measure these externalities.

A Benefit Transfer Approach to the Estimation of Agro-Ecosystems Services Benefits: A Case Study of Kern County, CaliforniaQenani-Petrela, E.; Noel, J. & Mastin, T.2007

N/A

The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the use of benefit transfer as methodology for measuring baseline and marginal value (loss) estimates of agro-ecosystem non-market goods and services. The benefit transfer methodology is used to estimate the agro-ecosystem non-market goods and services values in Kern County, California. We conclude by suggesting that some estimate of the value of the non-market good and services provided by agro-ecosystem functions is important to the determination of either public policy prescriptions or market-based incentive programs that have as their objective maintaining or increasing those agro-ecosystem function non-market goods and services.

N/A

In 2004, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection partnered with the Geraldine R. Dodge and William Penn Foundations to undertake an important project to assess the economic value of New Jersey’s natural resources. As a result of generous funding from the two foundations, DEP entered into a contract with the Gund Institute for Ecological Economics, Rubinstein Institute of Environment and Natural Resources at the University of Vermont (“UVM”). The UVM researchers were charged with examining the ecosystem services portion of the project, and DEP staff were charged with examining the ecosystem goods part of the project.

Estimating Cost Effectiveness of Residential Yard Trees for Improving Air Quality in Sacramento, California, Using Existing ModelsMcPherson, G.; Scott, K. & Simpson, J.1997

Pacific Southwest Research Station

N/A

The Sacramento Municipal Utility District's (SMUD) shade tree program will result in the planting of 500,000 trees and has been found to produce net benefits from air conditioning savings. In this study we assume three scenarios (base, highest, and lowest benefits) based on the SMUD program and apply Best Available Control Technology (BACT) cost analysis to determine if shade trees planted in residential yards can be a cost effective means to improve air quality.

The role of ecosystem valuation in environmental decision making: Hydropower relicensing and dam removal on the Elwha RiverGowan, C.; Stephenson, K. & Shabman, L.2005

Ecological Economics

N/A

A primary, but rarely examined, justification for ecosystem valuation studies is that monetization of environmental amenities and services makes a needed contribution to environmental decision making. This paper systematically examines the role and contribution of economic analysis, and specifically ecosystem valuation, in a precedent-setting dam removal case. The removal of operating hydropower dams for the purpose of ecosystem restoration (as opposed for safety reasons) is rapidly gaining national attention. One of the first examples involved two dams on the Elwha River in the state of Washington. In this paper we describe the technical analysis that was employed and how such analysis contributed to that dam removal decision.

The travel cost method is a widely used technique for the valuation of recreation sites in the absence of organized markets. While it has been shown theoretically (Freeman 1979; Feenberg and Mills 1980) and empirically (Stevens 1966; Reiling et al. 1973) how travel cost can also be used to estimate the benefits from an improvement in environmental quality at a recreation site, the method is faced with a basic problem. Suppose the quality of recreation at a site has become degraded by pollution to the extent that many recreationists have shifted their water recreation to other substitute sites.

Ecosystem services are the benefits people obtain from ecosystems (examples are listed in Table 1). Some of these, such as the provisioning services (or goods) like food, timber and fresh water, are well-known and routinely included in assessments. Others, such as the regulating services of carbon storage and sequestration, watershed protection, storm protection, pollination, or the cultural services of recreation and spiritual values, are often overlooked in policies, plans and programmes (PPP) preparation because they are not traded in the market and internalized in traditional cost-benefit analyses.

The last two years have seen the idea of a “green economy” float out of its specialist moorings in environmental economics and into the mainstream of policy discourse. It is found increasingly in the words of heads of state and finance ministers, in the text of G20 communiqués, and discussed in the context of sustainable development and poverty eradication

Reductions in deforestation and forest degradation are advocated as a means to mitigate climate change. The formulation and implementation of policies to achieve such reductions requires an understanding of current and historic land-use change and associated greenhouse gas emissions. In addition, it is often proposed that any reduction in emissions be measured against a reference scenario that describes future land-use in the absence of intervention. However, the information needed to progress this agenda is rarely available, as robust data on the extent and causes of land-use change, and the associated changes in carbon stocks, are sparse, particularly in African woodlands.

Conservation Areas and their buffer areas are an important source of livelihood for rural populations and their contribution to poverty reduction can be increased. Many CAs and their buffer areas are characterized by high miombo woodland cover and high poverty rates, especially those in the central and the northeast coastal regions of the country, or harbour important marine resources. These woodland and marine areas supply basic needs for large numbers of people whose livelihoods could be improved through various opportunities for the rural poor to move out of poverty.

In 1959 the first author (A.C.v.B.) discovered a peculiar snail of the pulmonate family Endodontidae in Rhodesia; on a subsequent expedition more specimens were obtained, so that a series is now available for descrip tion. The species undoubtedly belongs to the genus Trachycystis Pilsbry, 1893, but a new subgenus has to be created in order to accomodate this particular species. Anatomical data and figures have been supplied by the second author (B.V.), while the first author is responsible for the re maining part of text and figures.

This project refers only to seismic surveys and exploration drilling of wells in shallow waters mainly less than 200m in depth in Offshore Area 1, as well as the coastal waters present within the concession area of the adjacent Onshore Block. The main objective of the project is to determine if the prospects, identified after the seismic surveys and exploration drilling, have hydrocarbons in commercial quantities. The seismic survey will allow the identification of prospects for exploration drilling, using acoustic energy to map the structure of the earth’s crust below the seafloor. Exploration drilling is a temporary activity aimed to determine the presence of hydrocarbons.
