Adopted in May 1992 by 156 countries, the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) aims to promote the conservation of biological diversity; sustainable use of its components and equitable sharing in the use of genetic resources. Mozambique ratified the CBD in August 1994, through Resolution 2/94 of 24 August. Under Article 6 of the CBD, Parties are encouraged to develop a National Strategy and Action Plan for the Conservation of Biodiversity (NBSAP), a document that works as the global and national framework for implementing the Convention's objectives, the promotion of conservation and sustainable use of biodiversity.

This report documents how the spread of biofuels is affecting land access for poorer groups in Mozambique, and what actions are being taken, successfully and unsuccessfully, to secure land access for poorer groups. To the extent possible given the recent nature of the biofuels boom in Mozambique, the report also assesses the early impacts of a few biofuels projects. The report is based on a review of existing documentation, on multi-stakeholder interviews and on case studies of three biofuels projects. The aim is to feed into debates on biofuels both nationally and internationally.

The size and structure of a photographically identified population of reef manta ray, Manta alfredi, were examined at aggregation sites over a four-year period in southern Mozambique. The use and standardisation of photo-ID techniques was examined as a minimally-intrusive means to study this species. Using these techniques, we report on the size, structure and seasonality of this population of M. alfredi. In total, 449 individuals were identified during this time period, 40.5% of which were re-sighted on at least one occasion. The longest period between re-sighting events was 1,252 days.

China is developing rapidly. Understanding the economic value of natural systems in areas like the Qinghai Province is essential to promote development and a high quality of life in both rural and urban communities. Many economic measures were developed when natural capital was abundant and built (man-made) capital was scarce. Today the goods and services of nature, like water, food, energy, flood protection and climate stability, are becoming scarce and more valuable. It is increasingly apparent that not only built capital, financial capital and labor are primary factors of production for economic development, but natural systems are as well. Until recently, land and natural systems were frequently excluded in economic analysis.

The aim of the Little Biodiversity Finance Book is to help key stakeholders including governments, NGOs, the private sector, indigenous peoples and local communities to compare existing and future options for biodiversity and ecosystem finance in a clear and consistent way. To do this, this publication introduces an overarching framework that organises financial mechanisms under three main headings: revenue generation, delivery and institutional arrangements. These modules can be thought of as independent building blocks that can be arranged in a ‘mix and match’ approach, choosing the most suitable options from each module to create a more effective, efficient, and equitable financial system.

This sourcebook provides a consensus perspective from the global community of earth observation and carbon experts on methodological issues relating to quantifying thegreenhouse gas (GHG) impacts of implementing mitigation activities related to the forestland use in developing countries (REDD+). Currently the climate negotiations identify five forest-related REDD+ activities as mitigation actions by developing countries,namely: reducing emissions from deforestation (which implies a land-use change) and reducing emissions from forest degradation, conservation of forest carbon stocks sustainable management of forest land, enhancement of forest carbon stocks (alrelating to carbon stock changes and GHG emissions within managed forest land use).

Since the appearance of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA), a growing body of knowledge on ecosystem services is developing. After years of academic developments of the concepts, the approach is now increasingly applied in practice, supporting decision-making and guiding development into a more sustainable direction. For some reason, the Strategic Environmental Assessments (SEA) community has hardly taken advantage of opportunities provided by the use of ecosystem services as a means to translate the biophysical environment into societal benefits. Even though we have looked for SEA case material very seriously, only few SEA cases were available with a clear recognition of ecosystem services.

The benefits provided by natural ecosystems are both widely recognized and poorly understood. What is increasingly clear, however, is that natural ecosystems are under enormous pressure around the world from the growing demands we place on them. Growth in human populations and prosperity translates into increased conversion of natural ecosystems to agricultural, industrial, or residential use, but also into increased demand for ecosystem inputs, such as fresh water, fiber, and soil fertility, as well as increased pressure on the capacity of natural ecosystems to assimilate our waste, including air and water pollution as well as solid waste.

Rio Tinto has a policy goal of net positive impact (NPI) on biodiversity in its operations. The company aims to achieve NPI by combining state-of-the-art avoidance, mitigation and ecosystem restoration with biodiversity offsets and other conservation actions. In Madagascar, as part of its offset strategy, the company is considering supporting the conservation of approximately 60,000 hectares of lowland rainforest, to compensate in part for the unavoidable residual impacts of its mining operations in the region. The area to be conserved and the resulting biodiversity benefits are expected to meet and possibly exceed the conservation gains required to compensate for the residual impacts of the mining operation.

In 2007, three UK Overseas Territories – Bermuda, the Cayman Islands and Montserrat – were awarded funding by the Overseas Territories Environment Programme (OTEP) to conduct environmental valuation studies. All three Territories aim to use valuation to demonstrate the benefi ts of the environment for human wellbeing, and to support more sustainable decision making in small islands. These valuation studies cover a variety of issues and ecosystems typical to small islands; the contexts include marine, coastal, inland mangrove wetland, and forest ecosystems, located in Territories with varying levels of development.

The annotated literature review is divided into three sections. The first section of the literature review is the largest and it summarizes the theoretical thinking behind the valuation of ecosystem services. It is by far the largest section of the review because the bulk of thinking on ecosystem valuation has been theoretical or analytical. The second section of the review summarizes the limited number of studies that have attempted to empirically value ecosystems services. The third section is composed of studies related to ecosystem service valuation in areas such as the measurement of the multifunctional attributes of agriculture.
