Valuing The Puget Sound Basin Revealing Our Best InvestmentsBatker, D. Et al.2010

Earth Economics

N/A

Nature provides goods and services offering magnificent value and extraordinary investment opportunity. 14 goods and services provided by nature within the Puget Sound Basin provide benefits worth between $9.7 billion and $83 billion every year. This “natural capital” includes drinking water, food, wildlife, climate regulaKon, flood protecKon, recreaKon, aestheKc value and more. Valuing the asset that provides this annual flow of goods and services—that is, the natural capital of the Puget Sound Basin, as if it were a capital asset shows it would be valued between $305 billion and $2.6 trillion (at a 3% discount rate).

Plano Regional de Ordenamento do Território da Área Metropolitana de Lisboa – Processo de alteraçãoA/D2008

N/A

N/A

The penaeid prawns, or shrimps as they are referred to outside the Indian and western Pacific Oceans, have a world-wide distribution in tropical and sub-tropical seas within the 20oC isotherms. They are most varied in the Indo-Pacific where there are roughly five times more species than in the Atlantic. The Indo-Pacific region, which stretches from eastern Australia and the Philippines to eastern and southern Africa, supports 125 species of which 124 are endemic.

A unifying framework for the underlying mechanisms of avian avoidance of wind turbinesMay, R.2015

Biological Conservation

N/A

The construction and operation of wind-power plants may affect birds through collision mortality, reduced habitat utilization due to disturbance, barriers to movement and habitat modifications, with the nature and magnitude of those effects being site- and species-specific. Birds may however manage these effects through fleeing, activity shifts or changed habitat utilization; usually termed avoidance. Given the important role avoidance plays in estimating the impact wind-power development has on birds, there is a pressing need to formalizing the avoidance process. Crucial in this context is to identify the underlying mechanisms of behavioural responses by birds to wind-power plants and individual turbines.

The occurrence of an impact can be properly assessed through the implementation of a Before-After/ Control (Reference)-Impact (BACI) approach. This method aims to estimate a variable’s value before and after the impact, comparing its changes against a control site without impact. It allows taking into account the stochastic variables that cannot be controlled during the monitoring programme.

Assessment of the impact on the marine environment of offshore oil and gas activity an overview of monitoring results in the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and NorwayOSPAR Commission2007

N/A

The OSPAR Joint Assessment Monitoring Programme requires by 2007 the preparation of an assessment of the impact on the marine environment from offshore oil and gas activities (JAMP Product OA-1). The purpose is to assess progress against the objective of the offshore strategy and to contribute to the overall assessments of the impacts of offshore oil and gas activities in the North-East Atlantic and to the Quality Status Report 2010. The assessment should consider the impact and, if possible, trends of concentrations in the marine environment for selected chemical and biological parameters as a result of discharges and losses from offshore installations.

N/A

A literature review, internet searches, and communications with personnel working with unmanned aerial systems (UAS) were used to identify the capabilities of UAS throughout the world. We assessed their ability to replace manned aerial surveys for marine mammals, sea turtles and sea birds; monitor sea ice and other physical features and be platforms for search and rescue operations that are conducted by oil and gas exploration and production companies working in offshore Arctic and sub-Arctic waters. The vast majority of the systems identified were either too expensive or their capabilities did not meet minimum standards necessary to perform the tasks required of them.

Purpose of Inventory - As part of its biological inventory program the National Park Service (NPS) contracted with the Oklahoma Natural Heritage Inventory to conduct a formal and comprehensive mammal, bird, and herpetological inventory of Chickasaw National Recreation Area (CNRA), Oklahoma. The objective of this inventory is to positively identify 90% of the tetrapod vertebrates that inhabit CNRA. Pre-inventory lists of vertebrates suspected to occur in Murray County or South Central Oklahoma were compiled (Appendix I). Although these lists undoubtedly contain more species than actually occur on the National Recreation Area, they were used to gauge inventory progress

Forest leopards have never been systematically surveyed in African forests, in spite of their potentially vital ecological role as the sole large mammalian predators in these systems. Because leopards are rarely seen in this habitat, and are difficult to survey using the most common techniques for assessing relative abundances of forest mammals, baseline knowledge of leopard ecology and responses to human disturbance in African forests remain largely unknown.

N/A

Progress in South African estuarine ichthyology between 1946 and 1995 is reviewed. The early estuary surveys of the 1950s and 1960s resulted in the compilation of species lists for individual systems. but contained very little biological or ecological information on fishes. These surveys were superseded by both autecological and synecological srudies in the 1970s and 1980s, which yielded descriptive and process-orientated information on a wide variety of species. Estuarine research during the 1990s has focused increasingly at the community level. with several review papers on the life-history styles of groups of estuarine-associated fishes being published.

The development of electrical infrastructure to supply rural households is considered economically unfeasible because of the high cost of capital investment required to expand the distribution grids. Although domestic electricity consumption in many developing regions is small when compared to the requirements of some emerging agro- industries, the social benefits are significant, such that many donor agencies agree to finance grid extensions based on poorly projected social benefits of electrification.

The purpose of this research was to investigate the different household factors that a play a role in determining cookstove adoption and the switch from firewood and charcoal to LPG or other modern fuels. Household energy transition theory presents the energy ladder model that depicts income as the sole driver of fuel switching. Under household factors there are economic, non-economic, and cultural and behavioral factors that influence stove and fuel use. Income, household size, and food preferences are for example all variables that could play a role in determining household energy use.

They are exposed to levels of indoor cooking smoke, in the form of small particulates, up to 20 times higher than the maximum recommended levels of the World Health Organization (WHO 2005). It is estimated that smoke from cooking fuels accounts for nearly 2 million deaths annually (WHO and UNDP 2009), which is more than the deaths from malaria or tuberculosis; by 2030 over 4,000 people will die prematurely each day from household air pollution (IEA 2010).
