African wetlands are a very important source of natural resources upon which many rural economies depend. Despite their importance, wetlands throughout Africa are being modified and reclaimed. A major factor contributing to these activities is that decision-makers often have insufficient understanding of the economic values of wetlands, so the protection of wetlands is not a serious alternative. Wetlands, however, have numerous goods and services that have an economic value, and economic valuation of wetlands can be applied to highlight this value to decision-makers.
