Illegal gold mining in the Chimanimani National Reserve: environmental and socio-economic assessment

- Manica

When illegal miners started extracting gold in the Reserve, the Government got concerned about its environmental and socio-economic impact. Therefore, a survey was carried out to identify the geographical extent of the mining, the number of miners involved, and to assess its environmental and socio-economic impact. Previous attempts to evict the miners resulted into a reduction of their number from 10000 to 2000. The remaining miners work in three zones but in a more dispersed way thus destroying nature in more places.
